Agario teams mode

Teams Mode is one of the five currently available game modes on the browser version of Agar.io.

In this mode there are three teams: blue, green and red. Cells are usually assigned to the team which has the least mass. This way the team gets more players to catch up with the dominant team.

The objective is to work together with the assigned team to dominate the map by defeating the other two teams.

A cell cannot eat its teammates in this mode, nor can go through them. They can however split through them and emerge on the other side of the teammate's cell.

Skins are not available in this game mode to prevent color confusion. However, slight shade variations of each team color exist for variety.

Strategy[]

Collaboration techniques:[]

Collaborations (also know as "collabs") in team mode are teammates helping each other (i.e. collaborating) in any form to eat enemy cells. These are some common collab techniques.

Overlap feed kills[]

A common technique in teams mode is to overlap an enemy cell, and wait for your teammates to feed you until you can absorb it. This is known as an overlap kill. Be sure to feed your teammates too if you see them overlapping other teams' cells!

Virus[]

Be sure to throw a virus at enemy cells if they are chasing you/your teammate(s), or you/your teammate(s) are chasing them. However, avoid throwing viruses at cells from the other dominated team, if the dominating team still has >60% of the global mass.

Regular push[]

A teammate pushes behind a (usually bigger) teammate in the direction of the enemy cell, making the teammate faster.

Split push[]

You can split on a teammate to push them towards an enemy cell to eat it. The impact of split pushes is much greater than that of regular pushes, and it increases with the size of the pushing teammate. However, do not split further than the centre of the teammate's cell, as your piece(s) may go into the enemy instead!

  • If your team have more than double the mass of the target, push and split push your teammate in multiple pieces. If the target is about half of your teammate’s mass and a small distance away from your teammate, you can signal them to split by ejecting mass between your teammate and the target, then split pushing and them towards the target while feeding them.
  • If your team has about double the mass of the target, feed your teammate until they are just big enough to eat the target, while pushing/split pushing them. This prevents the target from moving backwards to counter your feed, and makes it harder for them to split to the back.
  • If your team has barely enough mass (about 1.5x) to overlap feed kill the target, split push your teammate to overlap the target, then feed. Be sure to watch out for the target moving backwards to counter your feed though. Do NOT feed your teammate while you are pushing them. Only feed when they are close to the enemy cell.

You can split push more than once, as long as you are still able to split. Split pushing with multiple splits at once has a greater short term impact, so it is best when the teammate is close to the enemy cell, but not close enough to get it with a single split push. The enemy cell will usually have no time to react and split to the back to eat you. Split pushing with multiple splits one by one (and then using regular pushing) will push the teammate further in the long term, so it is useful if the enemy cell is further away. However, there is the risk of the enemy cell splitting to the back to eat you. Be sure to self feed if that happens.

The strategy in team mode also depends a lot on how good your team is doing.

Dominating team[]

There will be very little opposition to eat. That can be quite frustrating, so we see many players splitting a lot to catch small cells. Be very careful about this, as this is exactly the kind of mistake that cells from minority teams are waiting for to grow their mass. Occasionally, a big cell from the minority teams will emerge, usually after eating an over-split cell from the majority team. Many big cells from the dominating team will chase it, and try to overlap kill it.

In several instances, one team has completely wiped out the other teams, controlling 99-100% of the mass. This happens only at the end of a map (closing map, when no more new cells are accepted).

Most people think that playing in the dominating team is easier than playing in the minority teams. Actually it's not. Keeping a map dominated for a long time (1 or 2 hours) is very difficult. Because some cells from the majority team get bored, leave dead cells on the map (easy food for the opponents), or make mistakes (split too much), there's always a breakthrough happening (a cell from the minority team getting big). Also after a while dominating, the team spirit (helping each others, rewarding those who helped you) is going away little by little. To the contrary, the team spirit in the dominated teams tends to grow little by little. The cells start to know each other after a while, and a sort of friendship emerges between them. They collaborate more and more until they can make a come back.

Minority team[]

Things are quite different. Always keep an eye out for over-split cells from the majority team. This is your best chance to get a fair mass, also called a "breakthrough". If you're small, try to grow your mass as soon as possible. But most importantly, help the few of your teammates who managed to get big. They're chased by many cells from the dominating team, and won't survive very long without your help. The most efficient thing you can do to help a teammate, is to send a virus to explode its chasers. Be ready to sacrifice yourself for the team; if you're small, that's not a big deal.

If you're big in a dominated team, you'll be chased as soon as they see you. Most of the time, they'll get you. But try to survive as long as possible. While they are busy with you, your teammates can grow their mass more peacefully, and you'll benefit from this when you restart. When all cells are on you, ready to overlap you, a way to survive longer or even escape sometimes, is to stay between 2 cells of the dominant team, avoiding the viruses and the cells that can split-kill you. However, one of the 2 cells may split away, so this may not be viable against better teams.

If you find a forest of viruses, remember where it is, and come back to it in case you're chased, before you're surrounded. The big cells from the majority team won't follow you in a virus forest, that's too risky for them. Also, don't hesitate to throw a virus if one of them gets too close. If the dominating team players are smart enough, they might eat up the viruses to clear the path for their teammates, but those players are rarely seen.

If you're big and find another big teammate, try to stick together, or at least remember in which direction your teammate has gone in case you're in trouble. Having a strong teammate on your side will discourage the cells from the majority team to overlap you or your teammate, as you will be able to overlap kill them. No matter how skilled you are, you won't achieve a turnaround on your own, except maybe in China or Oceania. You'll manage to get really big at one point, but that won't be enough for a turnaround. Find teammates you can trust, especially those who helped you to make kills, and REWARD them by sending some of your mass. The team spirit and good teammates is usually what allows for a successful turnaround.

As for the cells from the other minority team: when you're small, don't hesitate to eat them. It has very few consequences, and it's a way to grow your mass faster to eventually make a breakthrough. When you're big, think twice before eating them. They can keep the majority team busy and give you more freedom to grow your mass. Always prefer to eat cells from the dominating team; but if you see a big cell from the other minority team in a very bad situation (split or exploded), it's better to eat it before it's eaten by the dominating team. If they are surrounded by big cells from the dominating team, try to escape fast instead of going for the cell.

When the majority team has less than 60% of the global mass, things are different, you might start to eat all cells whether they are from the minority or majority team. A general rule of thumb for eating the other minority team's cells: If it's a simple split or double split kill, just do it. Avoid chasing them for a long time, virusing them, or oversplitting for them if they are small.

Cross-teaming[]

Main article: Cross-Teamers

Some players think that cross-teaming with a cell from the other minority team is the best way to break the domination. It's not. Most of the time you'll be hated and chased by all cells around; including your own teammates sometimes, and defeated. The Anti-Team Penalty also applies on team mode, and you might trigger it if you xteam. But most importantly, xteaming will always result in your xteaming partner eating your true teammates.

Nevertheless in some situations, when you're surrounded by many cells from the majority team, giving away all your mass to a cell from the other minority team is your best move. When a team has 75% of the mass, having a strong cell keeping them busy is good for both minority teams. That allows all cells from minority teams to grow their mass more peacefully.

Hardcore xteamers that xteam all the time and even block their own colour are usually rare, though they are very common in some regions like East Asia and South America. If you have to deal with hardcore xteamers on a regular basis, this guide is for you.

Once a team has the majority of mass under their control, it's difficult to make a comeback, but not impossible. Reversing the situation is known as a turnaround. You'll need luck, perseverance, and a good team, but it's far from impossible. It happens all the time and every day. And once again, you don't need xteaming to achieve this. Actually, making a turnaround is often easier than keeping the domination for a long time after the turnaround is done. Turnarounds always happen, to your benefit or against you.

Updated Version[]

The classic version of Teams Mode was updated in May 2019. In this version players join one of two available teams. It has some similarity to Battle Royale since the duration of a match is limited to 4 minutes. However, by September 2019, the classic Teams Mode was restored.
